Constellation Project

These are the constellations we will be doing for our constellation cans.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR REPORTS

You will be asked to make a five minute presentation which includes the following information:

Name of constellation
Where and when it can be seen
Its location in the sky, using then Dippers and other well-known constellations as guide posts.
Which season you are most likely to see this in the evening sky
Especially bright stars or other interesting astronomical objects
The shape of the constellation as customarily drawn.
A Greek myth attached to this constellation. (You may wish to find and present stories from other mythologies as well but remember that this is a SHORT presentation.)

INSTRUCTIONS FOR CANS - This will be done in class, not for homework.

We will not begin the cans until after the winter break.

FOLLOW CAREFULLY

Find or make a picture of your constellation about the size of your can end. Turn it over and mark the same stars on the back side so that you have a mirror image.
Cover one end of your can with a black construction paper circle. Tape it down securely.
Cover the black paper with your mirror image pattern. With a compass or other sharp pointed instrument make holes to represent the stars in both pieces of paper. Try to make large holes for the large stars and small holes for the small stars.
Type and print out the name of your constellation and its legend in a rectangle the size and shape you need to cover the can's sides and tape the paper to the can. Include your own name, too.
